The Blue Spot

Sunday, 6 July 2008 16:20 by ronnie
Blake and Maura were students in a kindergarten class. One day Maura started humming. Her teacher politely asked her to stop, “It’s not polite to hum in class”, she said.  After several warnings, the teacher moved Maura’s clothespin from the green spot on the chart to the dreaded blue spot.  Maura was crushed.  Blake tried to help.  He patted her on the back, made funny faces, and offered comforting words. Nothing worked. Maura still felt alone.  Blake made the ultimate sacrifice.  While the teacher was watching, he began to hum.  The teacher warned him to stop.  He didn’t. She had no choice but to move his clothespin out of the green into the blue. Blake smiled, and Maura stopped crying.  She had a friend.  Every singe one of us has failed.  Our clips hang from the wrong end of the rope.  But Jesus loved us too much to leave us alone.  Like Blake, he voluntarily passed from green to blue, from right to wrong.  Blake took Maura’s loneliness, but Jesus took so much more.  He took our place.  Like Maura, we have a friend.

Getting Over Yourself

Sunday, 4 May 2008 20:41 by ronnie

How much of life is about YOU?  I think if we are honest we could say most of our lives are about us.  Jesus spent much of his life ministering to the needs of those around him.  He seemed to be more aware of the mission God had given him, than the hurt people had caused him.

It seems to me that the church would be a stronger place if we would focus on our   purpose and mission of reaching the world, rather than our own desires.  How many times do we complain about the way things are at church? We can be so set on seeing things done the way we think they should be done that we totally miss the mission of inviting people to church.  I have been around long enough to know that there is no perfect church.  There are no perfect people.  We need to learn to leave the baggage of criticism, unforgiveness, and hurt at the foot of the cross and pickup the greater mission of reaching the world.  To put it bluntly we need to get over ourselves.

Paul in his letter to the Philippians said, “…put yourself aside…”  “Don’t be obsessed with getting your own advantage.”  There is a mission that is greater than my own feelings.  I must be about my Fathers business.  How about you?

Are you "petered out"?

Monday, 28 April 2008 06:32 by ronnie
After doing a little research I'm fairly sure that the phrase "peter out" comes from a leaching process once associated with saltpeter mining.  To extract the saltpeter from the "peterdirt," the miners would put it through successive leaching of clear water.  For good dirt, somewhere about the sixth leaching, the saltpeter in the dirt would be pretty well all leached out. At that point, the miners said that the dirt had "petered out."  In time the phrase spread into more general use to refer to anything or anyone who was all worn out (exhausted).  By the way the word "saltpeter," means "salt-rock" because of the salty taste of saltpeter.  Of course the "peter" part comes from the Greek word meaning "rock" the same root that gives us "Peter" the famous apostle.  This makes me wonder if the phrase “petered out” refers to Peter telling Jesus he would be by His side but later disappearing, just as Jesus predicted.  Have you ever "petered out"?  You don't' have to look any further than the story in Mark 14 to see the process. Peter said, "Lord I'll die for you." but he couldn't even stay awake to pray for Him.  Moments later he and every other disciple ran in fear. Marks gospel says that when Jesus was on trial Peter was at a distance warming himself by the fire, staying a safe distance away from any conflict.  In the end Peter denied Jesus three times just as Jesus predicted.  Have you ever felt such passion for God you would be willing to die for Him only to find within hours you're broken down because you disappointed Him?  I don't think Peter is the only person to have "petered out." I will say for Peter somewhere between his complete failure and the Book of Acts he got it back. The encouraging thing for me is that through the process of the journey Jesus never stopped loving Him.  Today if you’re "petered out" know that Jesus never gives up on you and you are in a great place to do some amazing things for God.  Just stay on board...

I Have Need

Monday, 21 April 2008 08:25 by ronnie

Jesus was a teacher.  He taught not only orally, but by example.  Mark 11:1-3 is one such example.  So what can we learn from the great teacher today?  Let's look into a typical day in the life of Jesus and His disciples.  Jesus had issued a request that the disciples go into the village, upon their arrival they would find a donkey tied to a post that know man had sat upon.  He told them to untie the colt, bring it to Him and if any one ask about it let them know that the Lord has need of it. Don't miss the last part, "He will send it back immediately".  What strikes me in this story is Jesus had a need.  I mean he turned the water into wine, why not turn one of the disciples into a donkey. Hey it happened in Pinocchio!  I am amazed at how many times that when Jesus faced a need he turned to those he trusted.  Whatever needs Jesus may face we must never forget he needs us. He instructed them to untie what he needed.  What is it in my own life that Jesus is asking me to untie in order for Him to use it.  Is it fear, pride, material goods, greed, judgmentalism, time,... what is it?  If we are going to meet the needs of humanity we have to let go of some things and give them to Jesus.  However, whatever we give to him he always pays back.  The bible says, "He who gives to the poor, loans to the Lord, and he will repay."  I don't know about you, but my guess is that what we untie and give to Him, he gives is back in better shape.  For our fear He gives faith, pride - humility, greed - contentment, judgment - grace, for our material goods he supplies our need.  God always pays back; what he ask is that we untie what he has need of.  What do you need to untie today and trust God?

A New Idea

Saturday, 12 April 2008 19:23 by ronnie
I love to be around people with ideas. That’s what I love about Jesus, when presented with problematic situations, he always had a solution.  He was a solution-oriented person with a fresh way of looking at things.  In fact it was this quality in Jesus that upset so many religious people.  He came with a new idea, a fresh new way of relating to God.  Jesus majored on relationship in a world that majored on rules.  He focused on unity verses uniformity.  It's easy to find people who are experts at seeing the problem. It's the rare and valuable person who always seems to have an idea for the solution. When you examine the qualities of the people chosen most frequently for promotion and leadership, you discover that the vast majority are people who generate lots of new ideas —fresh ways of looking at a situation. Fear keeps most people from training their minds to think creatively.  Remember most people are more comfortable with old problems than with new solutions. Which are you?

They were saying...

Thursday, 10 April 2008 14:18 by ronnie
Have you ever heard what they were saying?  Has is ever gotten to you?  Are you off course today because of they?  Don't ever underestimate the "sway of they".  Jesus had to deal with it in his own life.  I was reading in Mark today and came across some of the "they's" that Jesus encountered. His family was saying, "He's out of his mind."  The scribes were saying, "He is possessed by the prince of demons."  Times really haven't changed have they?  People are always saying something about us based on there own perceptions or limited amounts of information. What if Jesus had listened?  "Maybe I am out of my mind, maybe I have this whole thing wrong." "Maybe I didn't hear the Father."  Listening to the wrong they can change the direction of our lives.  I don't know about you, but I'm glad Jesus was not swayed by they.  They were saying... and they always will be. Stay the course.

Conversionist

Monday, 7 April 2008 06:46 by ronnie
Pop-Culture is defined as a segment of culture that is popular with the masses.  It is advertising, celebrities, music, movies, television, fashion, sports, and arts.  Cultural background is an important part of any society.  When it comes to reaching people, the church must see pop-culture, not as the enemy, but as the reason Jesus came.  Our lives will not change in time, our lives will only change when our thinking changes.  Culture is progressive.  The bible begins in a garden and ends with a city in Revelation.  When God created man, He commanded man to develop the social world, to harness the natural world.  God issued the Cultural Mandate to plan, build and develop culture and civilization. However, man became corrupt and sinned against God.  It is important to note that even in mans corrupt state, he continued to create culture.  The problem is that man was creating culture that was corrupted and self-centered. While the fallen nature of man is destructive and intrinsically evil, God said there is something redeemable in man.  Redemption is not eradication, elimination, or destruction.  Redemption is fixing what is broken down and restoring it back to its original purpose.  When we understand the concept of redemption everything changes.  Redemption is not only the conversion of man, but of society.  God wants to convert our talents and gifts, so we can do culture in a way that glorifies Him.  We are called, not to hide from society; we are called to be the salt of the earth, the light of the world.  We are conversionist. God wants us doing more than saving the lost and getting them to Heaven, He wants us to be involved in culture.  Salt engages and penetrates its environment.  Salt converts everything it touches with flavor.  While we are not of the world, Jesus put us right in the middle of the world.  We are to use all the creativity and ability to create culture in a way that will lift up the name of Jesus.  What I believe is that God wants us to be involved in pop-culture without compromise. How about you are you a conversionit?

Dirty Jobs

Monday, 24 March 2008 08:57 by ronnie

Dirty Jobs is a program on the Discovery Channel in which host Mike Rowe is shown performing difficult, strange, and/or messy occupational duties alongside professional workers. I was thinking about Joseph of Aramathea in the Bible.  This is the prominent business man who came to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus after he had been crucified.  You talk about a dirty job.  Can you imagine what the body of Christ must have looked like, after an endless beating and a horrible crucifixion, not to mention the labor it took for this man to dig out a tomb suitable to put the body in. Joseph literally moved the body of Christ from death to life.  I believe that is exactly what God is calling us to do.  The Bible refers to the church as the Body of Christ.  I believe that the church today is dead when it comes to being relevant with the issues that people are facing in their lives.  Most of us as Christ - followers are comfortable just going to church and living our easy lives, while people around us are hurting.  I don't say that in a judgmental way, because I know it is not something we do intentionally, it's just the sway of they.  It's just the way it is.  I believe that God is looking for people who don't mind getting dirty, people who don't mind reaching down into the muck and mire of humanity and making a difference.  For to long the church has been "STUCK".  But what is it going to take to make a change?  Hard working men and women who are doing what it takes to reach people. If you are going to be a part of moving the Body of Christ for death to life you have to be willing to buy in to it.  It's not easy. How hard was it for Joseph to carve out and dig out a place for the Body of Christ to have a habitation in that city?  How about in your city?  It takes some sweat equity to build a church.  It takes some people willing to role up their sleeves and say, whatever it takes I'm going to do my part. Ministry is a four letter word, "STAY".  Joseph understood if you're going to build a great church you have to stay.  The greatest ability is stick-ability.  You just have to get in, dig it out, and stay.  It's a dirty job.

I Am Amazed

Wednesday, 19 March 2008 06:15 by ronnie
I am amazed at the goodness of God today.  I think of all the options He had in dealing with our lives, many which would have cost much less than the one he chose.  I mean why not just forget about us, why not let us do it on our own since that is really the way we want it?  He could have easily left us in our fallen state.  He could have said it's not worth the price.  He could have just as easily turned His back on us forever leaving us in darkness.  But He didn't.  He chose the road of sacrifice, the journey of the unfamiliar by entering into our world and living as a common man.  Can you imagine God living as a human?  But He did.  He experienced every aspect of life that you and I live.  He lived life among the fearful, the hurting, the downcast, the outcast, the hurting, the distressed, the dejected, the insecure, and the amazing thing is He lived among them as God.  A perfect God among the imperfection of humanity, and what was missing from his vocabulary was judgment and criticism.  How is it that in life we humans feel the right or the position to judge, when God among us chose not to do so?  When he confronted the woman caught in adultery he chose not to cast a stone of criticism, even though by his own words he left the door open for that option.  He was the only person in the crowd that day who had not sinned and yet he walked away dropping the same rocks that those who accused her possessed.  The difference He was God and we are not. It is impossible to hang out with Him daily and not be amazed at His tremendous unfailing love.  Jesus He's a friend forever.  I'm hanging out with him today.

Daily Planning

Sunday, 16 March 2008 21:30 by ronnie
Your ability to act on your highest priorities comes from 10-15 minutes spent each day planning. Throughtdaily planning you focus all your energy and power on answering two questions.  What are the highest priorites for me today and of these which do I value moost?  Planning daily involves checking today's appointments, making a realistic task list, and prioritizing.  The importance behind checking today's appointments is you cannot spend time you do not have.  After appoitments, how much time is left:  Plan for no more than 65% of that time, and remember to allow for opportunity, flexibility, and spontaneity.  Some interruptions, and I emphasis the word some, are divine appointments in disguise.  Finally, prioritize your task.  Give each task value, by assigning an A, B, or C; high importance, medium importance, or low importance.  The act of assigning value gives us an opportuity to get very clear on where we need to focus our attention and energy.  Assigning each task a number completes and fine tunes today's plan.  establishing sequence helps you see not only the value of the task, but the order that will be most effective.  Make a commitment this week to plan daily for 10-15 minutes
