A Great Cup of Coffee

Sunday, 31 August 2008 16:19 by ronnie
One of the most costly coffee beans in the world is the Kopi Luwak which sales for three hundred dollars a pound.  Only one thousand pounds of this coffee, at most, make it to the world market every year.  Kopi Luwak, the world’s most exotic bean, comes from only one place on the earth:  the island of Sumatra in Indonesia in a region known as Java.  The word kopi is Indonesian for “coffee.”  Luwak is Indonesian for the cat, a palm civet that is involved in the process of harvesting this bean.  About the size of a fox, the luwak is a nocturnal, fruit-eating cousin of the mongoose.  It roams at night over the island of Sumatra and only picks the most perfect, ripe coffee cherries to eat.  The civet cat then defecate the undigested coffee cherries in sausage like links, and local harvesters dig in the rainforest floor and river banks looking for the civet cat dung.  They wash the clumps until only the beans are left, which then are dried in the sun. Isn’t it amazing how God works?  He can turn buried trash into buried treasure.  The Hebrew word for “hell” was Sheol.  Heaven was Shiloh.  God can turn any Sheol into a Shiloh. The dominant story of the Scriptures is the story of how God takes what is worst, least, and most contemptible and does what is greatest, best, and strongest.  Remember, treasure chests can be hammered out of trash cans. Only God can make that kind of coffee.

Keep It Simple

Wednesday, 27 August 2008 08:24 by ronnie
I am so glad that the Lord is not complex. He keeps it simple. He's
leveled the playing field for all of us.There is simplicity in Christ.
Sometimes, we are tempted to think that unless we understand all the
Greek, Hebrew, theological arguments, historical context and every
hermeneutical law of Biblical interpretation, we cannot possibly understand
the deep things of God!  Relax. Jesus did not intend to be confusing.
The religious people of His day, the doctors of the Law, the Pharisees and
Sadducees tried to muddy the waters and make God austere, formal,
religious and mystifying. Jesus ruined their whole paradigm – He keeps it simple.
God meets us right where we are at. If you're a brainiac…the Lord will connect with
you in an intelligent way that makes sense to you. If you're not the
sharpest pencil in the drawer…have no fear! Jesus is a Person…not a subject.
He's personal…not a research project.  The beauty of the Lord is that He makes
the most wisdom-laden realities – simple! Take Redemption, for example,
when you study God's eternal plan for man it's absolutely amazing.
His foreknowledge, His attention to detail, His patience, His prophetic words,
the literal and symbolic types and shadows, the biological and miraculous
Incarnation and Jesus as the Son of God and Son of Man is beyond man's
mind – yet – simple.  If you don't fully understand all the mechanics of
your Great Salvation, no worries; you can still enjoy the experience of all
that Redemption means. You can have a personal, life-filled relationship
with God. We know Him and that's enough! There is simplicity in Christ.
Think about it this way. Perhaps, you don't understand all the inner
workings of the engine in your car. Good news –you don't need to
know all the mechanics just enjoy the simplicity of putting your key in the
ignition and driving your car! You don't have to impress anyone with deep
theological speech; just take pleasure in the reality of your personal
relationship with the Lord and all the wonders of His Person – in all
of its simplicity! If you've tried to make the whole Christian thing too
complex and confusing…relax today.

Are you moved?

Saturday, 16 August 2008 06:02 by ronnie
Do the people bug you or move you? When was the last time you were moved with compassion for people?  I am guilty of being distracted with my own life and I need to be reminded that Jesus came for the express purpose of helping others. Sometimes, we get so busy in our own worlds that we lose sight of the bigger picture. Worse, we become cold, detached and indifferent to the pain, hurt, suffering, emptiness and despair that define life for many people. If you need to be stirred up in compassion, take some time to "see". The next time you're around a crowd at the mall, airport, amusement park, local restaurant, or driving in traffictake some time to stare! Look at people. Make eye contact. Smile. Ponder what their lives might be like. Ask God to give you His heart of compassion for people. Without His compassion, we become selfish zombies like everyone else just moving through life. God forbid! Today, we need the Lord to stir us up with His compassion…and we need to be moved by it!

Integrity

Friday, 15 August 2008 06:06 by ronnie
One of the primary attributes that people are looking for is integrity.  A corporation conducted a recent study. Its purpose was to determine what accounted for the difference between the top producers and the average ones. When the study was complete it wasn't skill, knowledge, or charisma that distinguished the very best. The only common denominator they found was integrity. "Get the facts, get the truth, and get it to the troops." This was General George Patton's constant command to his staff. He knew that integrity, and the trust it produces, is absolutely vital for achieving victory. It still is today. Soldiers who fought alongside Patton knew he was a man of truth and, therefore, trusted him with their lives. Today, business leaders are rediscovering how vital ethical conduct is to success. Integrity sets you apart from today's masses raised on situational ethics and moral relativism. Integrity produces winners. And it always will.

Just some thoughts...

Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:29 by ronnie

1 Kings 9:4 - I'm a little confused, if I remember correctly this David who is referred to as a man of integrity slept with a man's wife and had the man killed to hide his sin.  Excuse me but that's not integrity.  So what is going on here.  God obviously looks at more than my actions.  The perception of integrity is seeing someone as always doing the right thing.  While I believe that to be true is is also admitting you did the wrong thing as proved by the life of David.  The question I have is are you willing to admit that you were not a man of your word, that you made a mistake?  That's integrity. I don't know it's just a thought.

Jeremiah 35 - You have to read this chapter.  In a world of excuses and playing the blame game when it comes to obeying God, this story is really refreshing.  The good news is that it is possible to obey God.  Way to go Rechabites. NO EXCUSES!!!!!!!

Mark 9 - Don't get frustrated, anxious, or fearful around the devil when he acts up through people.  This man's son throws a fit right in front of Jesus; an obvious distraction and Jesus turns around and has a conversation with the boy's father.  CHILL OUT!!!!!! Another crazy thing that happens in this chapter is the disciples get all bent out of shape because they see someone casting out a devil and he or she is not part of their group.  It makes me laugh...at least this other group got the job done.  The disciples couldn't even do that.  How often we get upset with results in other peoples lives because we don't see them in our own.  Who's fault is that?  DUH!!!!!!

JUST SOME THINGS TO THINK ABOUT

Whatever.

Tuesday, 12 August 2008 06:22 by ronnie
Isaiah 41:13 says, "I am the LORD your God, who holds your right hand, and I tell you, "Don't be afraid.  I will help you."  WOW!  What an incredible promise.  If I know anything, I know that God holds my right hand.  He is always with me and he is never letting go.  That's just the way HE is.  Contrary to popular belief God is not mad at you, He cheers for you, He encourages you and He is holding your right hand whatever you are going through.  I remember several months ago our daughter called us from her cell phone, she was traveling from a near by city in a horrible rain storm.  It was dark, she couldn't see, and it was unfamiliar territory.  She was about an hour a way from home, when she called.  The truth is she was nervous, and afraid.  My wife and I immediately jumped in the car drove about 30 miles and met her half way.  Janet jumped in the car with her, and they followed me back home.  I have to tell you I didn't give a moments thought to helping her.  I was willing to do whatever it took to make her feel safe and secure.  Janet and I dropped everything to meet our daughter half-way in the midst of her fear.  God will do the same.  He will jump in the car at your beckon call to help you.  Whatever it takes to make you feel safe, He will do it.  The thing we have to do is be willing to admit our fears and let Him help us.  I have to say as a father I felt good that night.  I felt like a warrior rescuing a valuable treasure.  Jesus said, If you being evil know how to do good, how much more does your heavenly father.  Get rid of the perception that God expects you to be perfect, to live life with no mistakes.  Listen God will jump in the car today and drive to meet you in the rain storm.  Just ask.  Whatever He is doing in His busy schedule He hasn't forgotten you.  I don't know, but I can feel Him walking with me and taking hold of my right hand.  Whatever.

We're Blessed

Monday, 11 August 2008 06:27 by ronnie

Last week we helped Mallory and our son-in-law Aaron move into their new apartment. It's one of those bittersweet days. That day I realized we blinked and she grew up. Camille graduates from High School this year, and Anna has two more years.  We just attended a family reunion, where nieces and nephews had children of their own; a whole new generation.  Where does the time go?  No one hands us an Owner's Manual when our children are born. We just have to trust God and figure it out. As parents, our most important task, challenge and joy is helping our kids become independently, dependent upon God as they develop their own relationship with the Lord. When they have a strong walk with God it helps every other area and relationship in their lives. Our greatest reward as parents is in seeing glimpses that this is happening! There are many things we've done wrong as parents, but the one thing we did right was helping our kids come to know Jesus personally for themselves. It's been a journey and an accumulation of hundreds of decisions to put the Lord and His priorities first in our family. As "pastors' kids" (PKs), we've tried to make it clear to them that we we're not going to put pressure on them to be perfect "PKs"…and neither was God. We've tried not to force them to do things particularly in their later years, but to steer them in there own decision making process. We have done our best to emphasize that the most important thing is for them to "be" Christians…and live lives that please the Lord. In the end, that's all that matters anyway.  Our kids have not been perfect…and neither have we; but I am not sure we could be any "prouder" of each of them than we are these days. We love our kids and the people they are becoming; and we even like them! There is a great sense of peace in knowing that they are in a good place with God that indeed they are growing and becoming strong in spirit, they are being filled with wisdom and they are being empowered by the grace of God that is upon them.  Today, if you are raising kids, sending one off to college or letting one fly away from your nest be encouraged. Rest in the confident knowing that He'll be faithful to reward you and your kids with grace, strength, and wisdom.
