We are having a great, refreshing time in Colorado this week hanging out with Aaron and Mallory, the Meiers and many other great friends. Arkansas is beautiful, but there is nothing like the majestic rocky mountians. They are breath taking. I have never laughed so hard in my life playing games last night. In fact I was laughing so hard that my head was bleeding. Well let me explain myself. I'm not sure I even can... We were Wal-Greens yesterday and I was driving. I got out of the car and shut the door. The number one rule when you are going to shut a car door is get out of the way of the door. The top corner of the door caught me on my forehead and cut a gash about a half inch long. It was alright until the skin was hanging. Janet, Mallory, and Aaron were freaking out. It honestly didn't hurt, it looks worse than it really is. So back to the laughing, obviously when you laugh blood flows to your head and there you go. Janet looked at me and said "Your head is bleeding." It was hilarious. I am doing much better this morning. If I can get a hold of the camera I will have to post a picture. It was one of those incident's that I couldn't repeat in a hundred years. You talk about feeling stupid!!! Today we are headed up to Estes Park. I just hope I don't start laughing again. More to come...

After my confession series I realize how difficult it can be to Get Real. I said last Sunday that I felt like I was standing in front of my underwear. What I meant to say was I feel like I am standing in my underwear. I think the first statement is more true. Let's face it being authentic is like being naked. However I believe that what people are looking for both in the church and outside the church is authenticity. Authentic, that’s a rare thing to see these days. I know it’s always easy to point the finger as someone else, but, what about me? The word “Authentic” means genuine or real. As a Christ follower, are you authentic? Are you genuine? So many times our hunger for God can be inauthentic; it is nothing more than a show, a religious duty that others expect from us. Jesus, said, “your words say one thing, but your heart is far from me.” While we may fool people, we know that we can never fool God. He knows who we really are. The wonderful thing is that he loves us in spite of our weakness. The challenge I face today is authentically hungering for spiritual transformation in my life. Not because you expect it of me, but because I am aware of my own weakness and need for the power of God in my life. The world is looking for “The REAL Thing”. Get Real!

OK I know that it's been a while since my last blog. I have had a ton going on including the wedding of my oldest daughter this last weekend. I have to say it was a wonderful experience. It is so wonderful to see your children follow the plan of God for their lives. I cannot think of anything more gratifying in life. My wife and I were just reflecting yesterday on the faithfulness of God. We were reading a letter that Janet had written to Mallory several months ago when we were in the wedding planning stages and just believing God for all the expenses that go along with making a dream wedding come true for our daughter. I have to say that God went over the top on this one. Everything that we had hoped for he provided and we really just stood in amazement in watching Him do what only he can do. The whole day was far above and beyond our expectations and it was one of the most unique and beautiful settings. God has always proved Himself faithful to us, but if you are like us we sometimes forget it. One of the cool things they did in the Old Testament was when God did something big, I mean when He left his hand print all over something, they built a memorial to his faithfulness. It wasn't some idol it was just a testimony to the awesomeness of God. I love it when he seeps into our lives and shows His goodness. We were overcome at how awesome He is and how He provided for everything. We will always look back on this time and see it as another instance where God did what only He can do. The next time your tempted to doubt his goodness, just think back on something that he did for you. WE ARE OVERWHELMED.

I have found myself doing this in so many ways this week with my oldest daughter getting married this weekend. I remember when God brought her into our lives, what a blessing. I remember buying her first swing set. I still remember her sitting in that swing and learning how to manipulate her body in such a way as to get the forward and backward motion thing going in order to build enough momentum to swing on her own. I remember teaching her to ride a bike without training wheels... It seems just like yesterday! This week I am letting go emotionally, I am allowing her to fulfill what God intended all this time...leave your father and mother and cleave to another. It's time to pass the baton. I'm doing it because it's right, not because it's easy. Mallory you will always be in my heart.

Life happens. So what? Paul said, " I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content." You can't always do anything about what life hands you, it's the unpredictable, the thing that blind sides us, the thing we were least expecting. I wish I could unscramble the egg sometimes, but I just can't. Paul said, "I have learned...". Getting the most out of life is not something we know, it is something that we have to learn as we are on the journey. I recently read a story that describes a farmer who once grew discontent with his farm. He griped about the lake on his property always needing to be stocked and managed...And those fat cows lumbered through his pasture. All the fencing and feeding, what a headache!... He called a Realtor and made plans to list the farm. A few days later the agent phoned, wanting approval for the advertisement she intended to place in the local paper. She read the ad to the farmer. It described a lovely farm in an ideal location-quiet and peaceful, contoured with rolling hills, carpeted with soft meadows, nourished by a fresh lake and blessed with well-bred livestock. The farmer said, "Read that ad to me again." After hearing it a second time, he decided, "I've changed my mind. I'm not going to sell. I've been looking for a place like that all my life." I don't know about you, but I lean toward the same tendency. I have so much, and yet how often I can see things as burdens and not blessings. God help me to be content and enjoy what I have. It's possible to be so focused on the negative that we miss what we have been waiting for all of our life. It's usually right under our nose. I am learning....

Are you generally a thermometer or a thermostat? Thermometers read the tempature of the enviornment, while thermostats monitor the tempature of the room and intervenes to change the atmosphere. I think somtimes we pray as thermometers instead of thermostats. Like thermometers our prayers reflect the reality of life, in other words we praise God for what is or we complain to God about what is not. I believe that what Jesus taught is that prayer is a delegated authority for his disciples to interrupt the work of darkness and extend the Kindom of God. Prayer is the ability to change the spiritual atmosphere of our life, our home and our community, and it should never be underestimated. So much of our praying is reactive and shoud be proactive. Abraham and God were friends and out of this relationship Abraham prayed the most powerful prayer of intervention in the scripture. He actully bargined with God for Sodom. Abraham stood in the gap for Sodom, negotiating a deal with God to spare the city if even ten righteous people could be found there. AMAZING! God wants us to jouney into friendship with Him and learn to excercise the power of prayer to intervene on behalf of others. My responsibility is not to figure God out, but simply to pray in faith, allowing God to shape not only my life, but the lives of other people. He has given us the priviledge to adjust the thermostat of our enviornment.

Yesterday I talked about the identity factor in prayer. In short our identity is formed through a life a prayer. However in order for that to happen prayer must be integrated in our daily life. Prayer is not something we do in order to prepare for the day, it is the means by which we travel through the day. Paul's admonition to the church was, "Don't worry about anything, instead pray about everything." (Phil. 4:6) Prayer must be integrated into the moments of our life and become the natural reflex to whatever the day hands us. Every task is tackled with an under-the -breath conversation with the Father. Archbishop Fenelon said, "Accustom yourself gradually to carry prayer into all your daily occupation-speak, act, work in peace, as if you were in prayer, as indeed you ought to be." Integrating prayer into the moments of life brings a sense of significance, satisfaction and holiness to our lives. The sixteenth-century monk Brother Lawrence, who wrote the classic book, "Practice the Presence of God" , said, "There is not in the world a kind of life more sweet and delightful than that of a continual conversation with God." I have found a new freshness in praying about everything and worrying about nothing. I seems to give order to the chaos of life. Learn to integrate prayer into your life 24/7. It is sure to make a difference.

I am in a place where my prayer life is being overhauled by God, so I think I'll just share some of my journey. I emphasize the journey part, because I'm not sure we ever truly arrive. We are always growing and learning. I know that prayer opens us to the deep work of God of forming our hearts. Prayer reveals, shapes, secures and sustains us; it is communion that reveals God's delight in us, God's fresh grace for the day and God's powerful presence within us. Prayer helps to identify us in Him. It shapes not only our self-image, but also our self-reality. Everyone needs a good reality check. Most of us want to avoid the painful shaping of our inner selves, yet wrestling thought the night is the way we fall into the greatness that God calls us to. Holding on to God in the middle of the night is never fun-it often causes a limp- but it is the kind of prayer that is life-shaping. Just ask Jacob. The journey from "Jacob" to "Israel", from "deceiver" to "prevailer" can only be taken through allowing God to truly identify who we are verses who he wants us to be. We come as we are, open and transparent before Him. I know that in order for us to change, prayer must never be a monologue, rather it is an active dialog, with times of listening for the thoughts of God. It is having the revelation of who we are, who He is, and more importantly how he sees us that transforms us. It is the key to it being said of us, "they have been with Jesus." Our resiliency in life is nurtured through our dialog with God. Take time today to lift your hands to heaven in absolute surrender and allow God to change in you what needs to be changed.

Ok I got your attention. I thought since it was confession month I would just add one to the mix. I really don't hate prayer, but I hate what it has become in my life. I'm not so sure that if you were honest with yourself you might not say the same thing. I tend to treat prayer as a means to an end, which degenerates into self-serving spiritual speech that leaves me spiritually thirsty. You know what I'm talking about..."Be-good prayers", "Bargining prayers", "Bellyache prayers", "Bless-me prayers", "Battle-on prayers"...should I go on? The true model of prayer is relational at it's core, and it permeates all aspects of private and public life. Prayer is not something we do in order to prepare for the day - it is the means by which we travel through the day. Every task is tackled with an under the breath conversation with the Father. Learning this can be life changing. God is looking for me to come as I am - no pretense, agenda, facade, or guardedness; it is openness, transparency and vulnerability that invite engagement and intimacy with the Father. Tell God all of your heart. Prayer is saying, "God put your fingers deep into the core of my life today." Prayer is letting God's voice speak to the center of who you are-to your guts-and let it resound in your whole being. I have found a new freshness in praying this week that honestly has been missing in my life. I say that with all honesty and sincerity. I am thankful for a Father who lovingly and patiently leads us and stays with us in the seasons of our lives, with the intent of revolutionizing us with His presence in a fresh and new way. I love what prayer has become for me this week. It has been like drinking a cup of fresh water every day. If you hate what prayer has become, get on your knees and be honest with God. He can handle the truth...
